Greece’s 2-0 defeat to Argentina in the preliminary round of the World Cup on Tuesday evening also marked the end of an era for the country’s national football team.
In a meeting with players on Wednesday, national team coach Otto Rehhagel announced his departure after nine years which, among others, saw Greece twice making it to the UEFA competition and even emerging as the Euro champions in 2004.
The 72-year-old German coach’s announcement followed that of assistant coach Yiannis Topalidis the previous day.
Following Rehhagel’s departure, the likeliest candidate to succeed him as Greece coach at the moment is Portuguese coach Fernando Santos, formerly coach of PAOK Thessaloniki and AEK Athens.
