Greek schools abroad closed down or merged !!

The Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religion closes down or merges numerous Greek schools abroad and especially those in Central Europe. By implementing this reform plan the Ministry of Education follows the path of the austerity measures, which are instituted by the Government. They have already recalled hundreds fellow-Greek educators and they have even closed down many schools ! Parallel, the Minister of Education Anna Diamantopoulou, announced a radical reformation of the schools’ operation of the Greek diaspora.
This new reform  caused a variety of reactions from the part of the educators who underline that : “They are playing with us!” Anna Diamantopoulou, however, explained that their  motive is to promote the Greek language in and out of the country’s borders. ” Our ulterior motive is to create a plan of school’s operation, per continent and per region having as focal point the Greek language, history as well as the Greek culture.”  According to the Ministry of Education, this effort aims at the promotion of the Greek language not only to the Fellow-Greeks but to any foreign citizen who wants to learn our language and history.
The majority of schools that are being closed down or merged are in Germany and especially in Berlin, Hamburg and many other city centres.
