Prime Minister Papandreou Orders Striking Truckers Back to Work

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has used a rare emergency order to force striking fuel-tanker drivers back to work after their crippling protest threatened tourism businesses and began causing food, fuel and medical shortages in many areas of the country, which also endangers the social and economic life and public health.
The government issued the civil mobilization order on the third full day of a strike that has closed most Greek gas stations. The standoff followed months of labor union opposition to austerity measures in debt strapped Greece.
“No special interest has the right to hold Greek society hostage. No one has the right to paralyze the country – no one” Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou stated.
Striking union leader Giorgos Tzortzatos refused to say whether his members would comply with the emergency order.  Truck drivers now must return to work within 24 hours or face arrest and risk losing their licences.
