80% of Greece’s petrol stations have run out of fuel as tanker and truck owners entered the third day of their indefinite strike in a protest against a draft bill to open up the road freight market. The situation was further aggravated yesterday as the strikers did not allow the private tanker trucks to enter many ports in order to supplement the islands. Only the supply of hospitals is permitted while long lines wait at petrol stations throughout the nation.
To make matters worse petrol stations are threatening to launch their own strike today; their position is not yet finalized.
This indefinite strike hits the tourism industry during Greece’s peak season- summer! Reservation cancellations are underway, while hoteliers are pleading with the government to take measures immediately in order to prevent further distruption.
