Vandals desecrated a Muslim cemetery in the Northeastern town of Komotini, where there is a Muslim minority. About 10 gravestones were smashed late Friday night into Saturday morning. Approximately 30 members of the local Muslim community subsequently demonstrated in the center of Komotini.
Greek government spokesman George Petalotis blamed the vandalism on: “marginal groups trying to sow hatred…Their acts must be condemned and are against our national interests”.
The fate of the Muslim minority living in Thrace remains an apple of discord between Athens and Ankara, despite efforts to improve their status in the 1990’s. Thrace lies in Greece nearby the Turkish border.
