According to information by Greece’s Disease Control and Prevention Centre 60 people are affected by the West Nile Virus and 4 have died. 29 patients are hospitalized and 8 of them are in ICU. Blood transfusions have been banned around the whole country which has caused serious problems to many hospitals. Reportedly the hospital of Larisa has the most serious blood shortage; as the last two days blood transfusions to anemics was not permitted. At the moment hospitals in Ioannina, Trikala, and other regions where infections have not been reported have sent bottles of blood to hospitals in need. Following the 60 cases, The Greek Disease Control and Prevention Centre announced measures of protection especially in places with severe cases.
