FM Droutsas Meets with UN Delegate on FYROM Issue

Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas met with the United Nations’s Special Representative on the issue of FYROM Matthew Nimetz, yesterday evening.
Droutsas told reporters that first and foremost, he expressed Greece’s appreciation for the UN’s  negotiating process and Nimetz’s role.  He underlined that Greece fully supports this process. He clearly stated the Greek widely know, clear, consistent and credible position on the FYROM name issue. Firstly, Greece has the political will to solve the issue.  Secondly that the solution that Greece can accept is of course within the framework of the well-known  “red line of a geographical qualifier for every use, erga omnes”.   Droutsas also mentioned Greece’s open invitation to Skopje’s leader to take part in the negotiations. However, there was no such move from Skopje’s side.  “I think it is telling that Mr. Gruevski (FYROM prime minister) has so far opted not to be present here at the UN General Assembly, where there was potential for a direct meeting with the Greek prime minister,” Droutsas added.
After the meeting  Nimetz declared that this is not the right time for final proposals.  He chose not to state many things, noting only that the meeting was fruitful.  He believes this because the Greek Foreign Minister stated his country’s positions and actions.  The two exchanged views in a constructive and friendly atmosphere. Finally, the UN’s envoy underlined that the the bilateral relationships of the two countries are now at a better level but it will take time until the issue can be finally resolved.
