Greek Prison Hunger Strike Participants Grows

The situation in Greek jails is becoming  more severe as a growing number of prisoners are joining in on the nation wide hunger strikes.  Many others are threatening an all-out strike.
Some 9,000 prisoners, out of a total of 12,600, in 26 of the country’s 33 jails, have been on hunger strike since last week.  These figures were circulated by representatives of the “Initiative for Prisoners Rights” organisation, while the number of prisoners that began the strike has surpassed 1,000.
Figures from the Ministry of Justice suggest that prisoners in 16 of Greece’s 33 jails are abstaining from meals and feeding themselves from the food storage sector, while 312 have begun a hunger strike.
