New Gas Field Discovered Between Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon & Gaza Strip

Greek expert Helias Konofagos talked with Fileleftheros newspaper.  He stated that Cyprus and Greece should make  financial and technical planning concerning the gas fields situated in the boarder area of Cyprus. He added that Greece should not stay inert concerning what is happening in the south-east of the Mediterranean. A gigantic natural gas field that could yield millions of barrels of oil was recently discovered on the maritime border between Israel, Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, Cyprus, and Northern Cyprus. While it could be a military catastrophe, steps are being taken to divide the spoils. The largest section discovered so far, the Leviathan gas field is believed to possibly contain, alongside natural gas, 4.2 billion barrels of oil and 0,5 trillion m3 of natural gaz (the actual needs of Greece for the next 100 years). The imminent visit of Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy and Dmitry Medvedev in Cyprus is to plan the new energy map and new geopolitics strategy, which are about to be created.  Greece should take part in this action, as well.

That’s a funny headline. Kind of like; “New Gas Field Discovered Between The North and South Poles”. Why can’t you just say that Israel discovered natural gas off-shore in Israeli waters? So far, no gas has been found off of Cyprus or Lebanon, although such discoveries are now more likely. Cyprus has an agreement with Israel, and the same US and Israeli companies that discovered the Israeli fields will search for gas off of Cyprus as well. Perhaps a pipline from Israel & Cyprus to Grecee will help supply Europe. Hopefully everybody will benifit. Unfortunatly, Lebanon and Turkey seem very jelous, instead of searching for their own gas in their own waters.

The fields are less than 80 miles from Haifa, almost due west. The only question is whether the Tamar and Leviathan fields are 25 miles from an Israeli/Lebanese line that runs due west from the border between Sour and Haifa, or whether the gas fields are 50 and 60 miles, respectively, from the maritime border/dividing line if it runs WNW from the border. Lebanon is a very weak position, they would be wise to simply explore their own waters which are substantial, and find their own gas supplies.
