Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou announced the creation of a photovoltaic park in Kozani. This solar photovoltaic park will be the biggest in the whole world, with a power capacity of 200 MW. Papandreou added that this construction will replace the harmful environment lignite factory and will establish a new age of sustainable development constructions.
This investment is estimated to cost 600 million euros. It will occupy a 5.300 acre area and employ 550 employees. The most important aspect of this construction is the reduction of polution by 300,000 tons per year! The photovoltaic park is expected to supply energy to 55,000 houses. The same area will operate a photovoltaic construction factory.
The Greek Public Power Corporation S.A. stated that unofficially, there are already three international companies interested in this construction.
This is not the first photovoltaic park to be constructed in Greece. In April 2010, Positive Energy, a contractor that specializes in using renewable energy technologies, completed the construction of a 100-kilowatt-peak (kWp) photovoltaic park in the southern Peloponnese. Currently the world’s largest photovoltaic park is in Ontario, Canada.
