Olympic-Aegean Airlines Merger Faces EU Veto

European Union regulators have asked for more concessions to encourage rival airlines to enter the Greek market, to permit the proposed merger of Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air, according to Reuters.
The two companies suggested remedies to the European Commission following an in-depth investigation into the merger last July, as it was concerned that the merger could lead to a monopoly on many domestic routes.
Sources note that the concessions offered have been insufficient to ease regulatory worries and the Commission’s decision is expected next week, probably on January 26th.  EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia has set a deadline for February 2nd for a decision, Reuters claims.
However, the same source noted that if the companies came up with further last-minute remedies, there was still the possibility of the merger receiving EU approval, according to the news agency.
