Low-cost European airline Ryanair will reinforce its presence in Greece by launching four new links from European hubs to the northern city of Thessaloniki, tourist officials announced Tuesday.
Ryanair hopes to boost business in Greece by 150,000 passengers yearly via flights starting in April from London, Brussels, Oslo and Stockholm to Thessaloniki, the city’s tourist bureau said.
In 2010, the Irish carrier opened routes to the Greek port city of Volos and the Aegean islands of Rhodes and Kos.
In its latest expansion, Ryanair is expected to operate three flights weekly from London (Standsted) and Brussels and twice weekly from Stockholm and Oslo to Thessaloniki.
Low-cost airline companies are taking off in Greece, particularly outside the capital Athens, say experts. They predict the trend will continue following the European Commission’s January veto of a merger between Greek carriers Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air.
