Tolis Voskopoulos' Tax Evasion Lands Him in Prison

Three years imprisonment with parole have been imposed on Greek singer Tolis Voskopoulos, regarding suspicion of tax evasion. The punishment was imposed by an Athens Misdemeanor Court as the singer declared he was unable to pay EUR 5,5 million in taxes, including the fines due to payment delays.
Voskopoulos’ accountant testified in court that his client could not be subject to tax adjustment regulations as the exorbitant fines increases would make the monthly installment so high that the singer cannot pay.
The singer can redeem the imprisonment by paying 5 euros per day, totaling 10,000 euros.
Tolis Voskopoulos, 70, was every Greeks’ singing darling during the 1970′s. He is married to ex-actress Angela Gerekou (photo).
Gerekou had served as the Minister of Culture and Tourism (Sept 2009 – May 2010) under the PASOK government of Prime Minister George Papandreou. However she had to resign in May 2010, when the tax evasion case of Tolis became public.
Too much stress and a huge debt led Tolis, 70, to the hospital where he underwent pace maker surgery.
