Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou announced Friday that he will travel on Sunday to Cairo to hold talks with Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak.
Papandreou said the decision to fly to Cairo came following telephone discussions he had with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
‘I decided to travel to Cairo in order to bring the message expressed by the European Union, as well as the Greek government,’ Papandreou said during a press conference at the European Union summit in Brussels.
‘We will stand by the Egyptian people.’
He said the international community is closely monitoring developments in Egypt, and Greece is particularly concerned because many Greeks live in the country.
