PM in Helsinki: Need Change, Not Just Protests Over Austerity Plan

Prime Minister George Papandreou said Wednesday he can understand the pain of the hundreds of thousands of people protesting in a nationwide general strike in Greece.
“Sometimes I would like to be out there protesting myself because I am not happy about what is happening, but it isn’t enough to protest. We have to change our country, and we are determined to do so,” Papandreou told a news conference in Helsinki.
Papandreou’s comment came as he visited Finnish Prime Minister Mari Kiviniemi (photo) to gather support for Greece’s interests ahead of a March 24-25 summit to decide on a competitiveness pact for the euro zone.
Kiviniemi said Wednesday that Finland is satisfied with Greece’s efforts to balance its economy.
Papandreou reiterated earlier statements that Greece wants to be credible to the European Union, its partners and creditors.
“I can guarantee you we will pay it back. The Finnish taxpayer has nothing to worry about. We will pay it back with interest,” Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said during a joint press conference with his Finnish counterpart Mari Kiviniemi.
