Demonstrating Doctors Prevented from Entering Ministry of Health by Riot Police

Last Friday’s protest of doctors, nurses and ambulance staff outside the Ministry of Health ended in clashes with riot police, who prevented them from forcing their way into the building. During the clashes, the President of Piraeus Doctors’ Union Varvara Anemodoura, was injured and taken to the hospital. The angry protest broke out when a relative of a patient claimed that a patient’s life was in danger, as there were no beds available in the hospital.  As a result, a doctor working at Attico hospital was arrested. Demonstrators also protested about a new bill and asked to meet with the Minister, who was absent at the time. It was then that the protestors tried to enter the building by force and riot police moved in to prevent them.
