Once a Peaceful City and Now Only Anger and Fear on the Streets

Athens is without a doubt a beautiful city, a city, however,  that is in turmoil and where the citizens are unsure and afraid of the future. Once renowned for being a peaceful, relaxing haven, the streets of Athens have turned into a bloodbath. Innocent people are paying with their lives, as people run amok to fight for their rights and for a country they feel is no longer theirs.
They are not wrong in their beliefs, they are ordinary people just like you and me. They do not have the power to move mountains…………….they have strong voices, but  their protests go unheard. Ask yourselves, “What you would do when facing a losing battle”? “What you would do to stop from losing a life full of old traditions and a country you once knew”?
I went out on the streets today, to ask  just that, and saw only anger and fear in the eyes of the Greek people. It was both disturbing and upsetting to listen to elderly people who said that they didn’t recognize their own country, to hear young people state there was no hope for their future, and young parents who claimed they were too afraid to take their children out into the warm sunshine.
If you are living in Greece, but do not have Greek roots, it’s not difficult to understand their despair………….sometimes, enough is enough.
Is it asking too much, for those who have the  future of Greece and its people in their hands to take a minute and think back, to remember Greece how it once was………..when people were smiling and proud to be Greek. When the streets were full of citizens not afraid to speak to and help their neighbors?
Greece is not just about the beautiful islands and the wonderful architecture, it’s also about its people……………..who should be rejoicing in this day and age and not suffering.
