Finance Minister Rejects GENOP Labor Union Demands

The meeting between Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos and representatives from GENOP, the labour union representing the Public Power Corporation (DEH) workers, ended without any progress being made. The Minister rejected GENOP’s request not to proceed with the sale of the 17% stake in the corporation still held by the state to the private sector, saying that for now it is impossible to change the government’s Medium-Term Economic Plan. “We will intensify our fight”, said DEH union leader Nikos Fotopoulos to journalists after the meeting with the Minister. “The government is standing firm on its position, the fight will continue and will be intensified,” said the union boss. It is now expected for DEH, which has already put twelve 4000-MW power plants out of service, to shut down other units.
