UNSG & Cypriot Leaders Conduct Positive Meetings

Leaders of both Cypriot communities, Demetris Christofias and Dervis Eroglu agreed in July 7th meeting in Geneva, on the intensification of negotiations on core issues of Cyprus and a new meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in October, in New York.
This was the statement made by the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, after their meeting and professional lunch on July 8th.  He also talked about the possibility of convening an international conference.
Mr. Ban Ki-moon expressed in his statement the expectation that by October, the leaders of both communities will announce to him that they have reached convergence on fundamental issues of Cyprus so as to make a new meeting in New York.

The statement by UN Secretary General had the consent of the two leaders and was read to reporters by Mr. Ban Ki-moon, in their presence.
In his statement, Mr. Ban Ki-moon reassured both leaders that he agrees that negotiations should be of “Cypriot property” and expressed his readiness “to offer them an extended involvement of the United Nations, without prejudice to this central authority.”
The two leaders when they return to Cyprus, he said, agreed to enter an intensive period of negotiations on fundamental issuesof Cyprus. This will bring the negotiation of the Cyprus’ issue closer to its end and will allow him to give a positive report to the Security Council, while paving the way for him to work on both sides towards the direction of a final international conference.
The two leaders said the UN Secretary General, have also recognized the need to prepare their communities for “the compromises needed to achieve a Cyprus settlement and the prospects of coexistence in a reunited Cyprus.”
Mr. Ban also said that after the meeting with two leaders last January, the two sides have worked steadily to advance the negotiations, but “progress was very slow and some important aspects have not been discussed yet.”
Therefore, he said, today’s meeting was useful and productive, as some of the difficulties that hinder the objective of the overall solution have been identified and the need for significant intensification of the negotiations has been discussed .
