Finance Ministry Commits To Lift Cases of Injustice

Evangelos Venizelos

The new tax law that will be presented in early September will lift some of the injustices of the Medium-Term Fiscal Strategy, told FinMin Evangelos Venizelos to concerned MPs, a day before the adoption of the program. The minister himself cited this assurance to reporters in the parliament, adding as example that there would be an effort to restrain VAT in restaurants.
After the adoption of the bill (and the “loss” of a MP), Deputy Finance Minister Pantelis Economou repeated these assurances, extending
adjustments to the other harsh measure of extraordinary contribution. He promised to exhaust every possibility of easing some citizen categories, for example, those who lost their jobs in 2011.
The ministry’s top executives insist on these assurances as Economou told Eleftherotypia newspaper that he personally disagrees with the increase of VAT in food services. “The rates will be reassessed”, he said.
Regarding extraordinary contribution, sources note that the Tax Offices won’t proceed with the calculation of every taxpayer, or send any notices, before they reassess all cases.
In any case, they refute reports that due to lack of time, all new obligations would be incorporated in the same notifications. “Even if we intended to do that, citizens would not be able to respond”, a senior officer said, adding that new tax law would adjust cases of injustice in the fiscal program and rationalize taxation.
