Orthopedic Surgeries Cost 10 Times More than Necessary

Bone transplants that cost 85.000.000 euro were carried out inĀ Greek hospitals and clinics in the past two years. The hospitals have currently bought bone transplants at prices ten times higher than the current ones and in larger quantities than necessary.
Until May of 2010, a price of 4.560 euro was fixed for all the sizes ofĀ dry human bone transplants which were used for orthopedics surgeries. However,Ā thanks toĀ the Observe Net of the Ministry of Health and the categorization in sizes, a transplant which cost 4.560 euro now costs only 470 euro. Even the most expensive sizes of these materials are estimatedĀ at 2.150 euro; half of the price they paid. According to the Ministry of Health, prices can be reduced more.
There was a big waste in surgeries as well. The following example is revealing. An orthopedics surgery carried out at KAT hospital cost 70.000 euro because of the extreme use of bone materials, when after considering the case the Social Security Organization IKA was justifying it at 8.500 euro.
The file with all the evidence is in the hands of the head of the First Instance Court Public Prosecutorā€™s Office, Helen Raikou.
