Residents Association Demolished Karkavitsas' Home

On July the 15th angry residents demolished Andreas Karkavitsas’ home in Lehaina. The Residents Association decided that the house was no longer useful.
The owners of the surrounding houses, which are mostly built without planning permission, decided in a general meeting that the house was in ruins and should be demolished because it could cause disease to the neighbouring people.

Andreas Karkavitsas was a Greek writer in Greek literature and also a naturalist along with Alexandros Papadiamantis. He was born in the town of Lechaina, in the modern Ilia Prefecture. He studied medicine and as an army doctor, traveled across a great range of villages and settlements, where he recorded traditions and legends. His work is very important for Greek writing.

According to different unions opposed to the demolition Greek author Andreas Karkavitsas’ house was the only legal property close to the beach and the only one that should have been preserved and protected. The granddaughter of Karkavitsas’ sister who owns the house was notified after the rubble was cleared. She mentioned that she had tried to repair the house, but residents had gone against her and did not let her continue.

The Deputy Mayor of Lehaina stated in his announcement that he was not informed of the desolation.
