No Books Printed for Students for the Start of the Year

Not any of the forty-five million copies of 1,200 titles distributed each year in schools has been printed yet. The first issues will be delivered to students in late October, at the earliest. The distribution of books may have been completed in most schools, before closure  for Christmas. That’s providing there will be no unexpected political developments. In the event of early elections, students will have their books between Halloween and Easter because there will be a heavy load of printing for electoral material, which is more profitable. This has never happened before in the history of 40 years of the Institute of Issuing Textbooks (OEDB). The Ministry of Education is already moving towards the discharge of the state budget from the cost of printed books in both primary, secondary and tertiary education. The draft of the new university law that has gotten the green light from the Cabinet is expected to be tabled in Parliament by the end of the month and clearly states that in 2014, the free distribution of university textbooks will be repealed. The cost for higher education will be multiplied for the average Greek family.
