Takeover of the Athens Suburban Railway at Agioi Theodoroi

The residents of the region Agioi Theodoroi, in the Peloponnese, gathered on 23, July, to protest over a private chemicals storage company that is planning to set up in their area. The protesters fear it will cause problems to the environment. As a result, they have asked  the Ministry of Environment and the General Secretary of the Region of Peloponnese, Petros Tatoulis, to withdraw their consent for the project.
On Saturday, 23, July, the residents took over the highway Athens-Korinthos in the region of Agioi Theodoroi thus blocking the traffic. Scuffles broke out between truck drivers and residents during the demonstration.
On 24, July, the protesters again tried to stage a protest march from the Evangelistria Square of Agioi Theodoroi towards the Suburban railway station, but were blocked by the Units for the Reinstatement of Order(MAT). For this reason, they followed another route and took over two rail lines of the suburban railway. Trains came to a stop and were delayed.
The mayor of Loutraki-Agioi Theodoroi Kostas Logothetis noted that the protests will likely to continue.
