Kevin Spacey and director Sam Mendes returned to Epidaurus, as they had promised, with the Shakespearean theatrical play “Richard III”. The play will be staged for three days and it is already sold out, as almost 27.500 tickets have been snapped up, a fact which was not expected due to the economic crisis in Greece. There are rumors that Prince Albert of Monaco and his wife Charlene will also attend a performance of the play.
All hotels and restaurants in the area are full for these three days and store owners claim that theatergoers will probably visit the wider area too, such as the city of Nafplio, which will benefit the local economy. People have even called to book a place at the port for their boats.
A similar vast crowd had gathered in August 2009, when the play “The Winter’s Tale” was staged, whose director was Sam Mendes and the leading role was played by Ethan Hawke.
The theatre company arrived on Wednesday evening. All the actors have been concentrating on their roles during rehearsals and Sam Mendes has made continuous improvements so that everything will run smoothly.
