The government, in an effort to control tax fraud and the circulation of black money, decided to use the so-called bug of the Hellenic National Intelligence Service. An investigation has been launched to identify the big offenders that have been working for years in the tax offices. The Ministry of Finance has collected data regarding the action developed by some senior tax officials. An internal investigation has taken place, however the results of this investigation were not those expected. Officials of the Ministry of Finance believe that the inquiry fell victim to a peculiar omertà ( ”code of silence” as it is called).
