Opening Hours of Public Services Increase to 40 Hours per Week

By a decision of Minister for Administrative Reform Dimitris Reppas, the opening hours of public services are changing, increasing from 37.5 to 40 hours per week.
Employees will be able to choose the following hours of arrival and departure:
– 7:00 to 15:00
– 7:30 to 15:30
– 8:00 to 16:00
– 8:30 to 16:30
– 9:00 to 17:00
Applications for preferred working hours must be submitted by August 8 and declarations of the choice of hours will be binding and valid until June 30, 2012.  Daily opening hours for public services will now be six hours, with the exception of tax offices which will remain open for 5.5 hours daily.
The new schedule will apply to permanent officials and staff of private law firms, the Public Sector, local authorities of Grade A and B, and other public entities.
The Civil Servants’ Confederation (ADEDY) has reacted strongly to the government’s decision to cut back benefits to civil servants, in reaction to the statement of government spokesman Elias Mossialos, who left open the question of redundancies in the public sector for ”sincere” employees or those who “white strike”.  “We never talked about white strike,” said ADEDY, via its general secretary Ilias Iliopoulos.
In a new statement on Friday, August 5, Mr. Mosialos stressed that “white strike and non-revenue collection are not legal rights. Public servants who do not collect money undermine the government program and create problems in the country. ”  He further stressed that the disciplinary sanctions imposed upon wrongdoers will change and violations will be judged based upon proportionality.
