Reforms in Health Care System

A new bill proposing reformsĀ in the Social Solidarity system will be ready by the Hellenic Ministry of Health by August 15.
Under the new bill, new unified registries of health care beneficiaries will be created to ensure that the ministry will be updated at all times concerning the number of beneficiaries. The Deputy Minister of Health noted that currently 6.2 billion euros are paid by taxpayers for health care benefits. He also referred to recent scandals concerning people who claimed to be blind or disabled and were fraudulently receiving health care benefits when theyĀ are completely healthy.
In reference to HealthĀ RecoveryĀ Centers, the Deputy Minister said that although some of them have the appropriate equipment and staff, they have not been used in an appropriate way. Ā Some of theĀ Physical and Social RehabilitationĀ Centers which do not fully function will be integrated into the National Health System (ESY) and will offer general health services.Ā According to evidence, physicalĀ rehabilitation in private centers cost 52 million euros to the Social Solidarity funds. Ā A central Board of Directors will also be established for similar centers in different regions.
A proposal is also on the table for deducting money from the pensions of people with chronic diseases, primarily the elderly or people who suffer from mental disorders and are hospitalized in Recovery Centers.
The aim of the ministry is toĀ offer more services for people who truly need help.
