Libya's Foreign Minister Expected in Athens

Abdelati al-Obeidi

Speculation of a possible political solution between the warring sides in Libya swirled Thursday as the Greek Foreign Ministry announced that the Libyan foreign minister was en route to Athens to deliver a message from Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi.
The visit was unscheduled.
The message, to be delivered by Abdelati al-Obeidi to Greek Foreign Minister Stavros Lambrinidis, came the same day as UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon told Libyan Prime Minister al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi by phone that he was worried work on a political solution to the fighting had stalled.
A Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman said the government was in close contact with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on the matter. It was not clear if al-Obeidi planned to visit other European countries while he was out of Libya.
Greece has pulled its embassy from Tripoli and set up an office in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi. However, it continues to maintain relations with both sides of the conflict.
