New School Year Begins with Shortages in Teaching Staff

”This school year, which is about to begin in a few weeks, is considered to be the most difficult year after the war,’, says General Secretary of the Ministry of Education Basilis Koulaidis. The gaps that exist in teaching staff both in elementary and in high schools will be huge.  There will also be shortages in the availability of textbooks, and long delays in the issuing of textbooks by the Textbook Publishing Organization (OEDB).
According to Mr. Koulaidis, the major problem will be the shortages that are expected to occur in teaching staff, with the gap between the number of teachers retiring far exceeding the number of new recruits. “This year, new appointments will be approximately 600,” he said. Last year, 11.000 teachers retired and this year their number is expected to exceed 12,000, since many teachers are rushing to guarantee receipt of their pensions and to leave the public sector.
