Night Patrols by Citizens in Volos Municipality

Rising crime rates have forced inhabitants of Volos to create a squad of unarmed night patrols to assist police in their work.  Citizens’ groups are being formed to assist in the protection of the area.  For their own protection, the identities of those involved in the patrols will be kept secret from everyone except the police and the Civil Protection of the municipality of Volos.
The decision to form these patrols was taken at a general meeting held under Sotiris Chalkias,  the representative of the local community in the enlarged municipality of Volos, Deputy Mayor on Policy Protection Matters Charalambos Tsampazis, a majority of the residents in Kato Lehonia, and local police officers.
Sotiris Halkias said that the patrols began last Tuesday evening. He noted also that the village has 1,700 permanent residents, though in the summer the population increases. “Only residents of Volos will care for their area, neither private police nor anyone else,” he stated, thanking people for their sensitivity and sense of solidarity.
