Thermaikos Reduces Waste by 30 Tons

The situation in Thermaikos today is better than it used to be in the past. Two ships of   the ”Save Our Sea” organization have been appointed to clean the area and have managed to collect more than 30 tons of waste and 150 qm2 wood and algae, since the beginning of 2011 until July 30th.

G. Gargoudis, director of  ”Save Our Sea”, noted that they collect plastic items, bottles, waste, woods and algae coming from the Axios river.

Over all, the situation has improved.  The pollution is now superficial and no longer affecting sea life.

The negative image of the gulf is due to bad weather conditions and natural events.

Close to the White Tour, the situation seems much  worse, and people are advised not to throw anything into the sea.   In spite of the efforts of ships to clean the sea, residents of the city frequently complain about the unpleasant smell of the Thermaikos Gulf. The municipality has the necessary equipment but is in need of more money to clean the waters more regularly.
