13,000 Arrivals To Be Lost In Rhodes And Kos?

Rumours on the suspension of wintertime routes of Irish airline Ryanair in Rhodes and Kos have caused turmoil in the local tourism sector.
Political actors in Rhodes note that local authorities have not paid part of the financial contribution to the company, provided by the contracts.
However, Tourism Minister G.Nikitiadis, who will visit Ryanair’s headquarters in Dublin soon, stated that no contract has been signed with the company.
“The government has not signed any contract with any low-budget airline […]. Which contracts were signed and how signed were signed and what obligations were assumed, all these are known only to those who signed the contracts, he said.
At the same time, the head of a political movement in Rhodes, G. Hadjimarkos, spoke of a letter sent by Ryanair, which request support (eg through advertising) by local authorities to improve its performance.
“The rumours going around had to do with the fact that the online booking is not available for the wintertime. Possible disruption of flight operations of Ryanair would undermine the efforts to extend the tourist season and convert Rhodes to an all-season tourist destination.
During November-April 2010 period, the number of Ryanair arrivals exceeded 8,000” the secretary of Rhodes hoteliers, Vangelis Moustakakis, told Capital.gr.
Approximately 13,300 passengers arrived in Rhodes and Kos in 2010, according to official figures.
The imminent withdrawal of winter is only a speculation, according to the Irish company.
“We do not comment on rumours or speculation” However, I can confirm that the configuration of our destination program would be finalized by mid September”, the company’s spokesman, Steven McNamara told Capital.gr.
However, despite what Ryanair calls a speculation, a political strife has broken out in Rhodes between Nikitiadis and local politicians who belong to the opposition party, with Hadjimarcos blaming the minister for lack of responsibility.
