23 Blue Flags for Aghios Nikolaos Beaches in Crete

The expanded Municipality of Aghios Nikolaos has won 23 blue flags in 2011 and is among the first four municipalities nationwide.
“Spinalonga, Elounda and the clean beaches are a major tourist attraction for thousands of visitors, because they provide safety and tranquility both for tourism and the environment of our region,” said the mayor of St. Nicholas Demetris Kounenakis. “Our goal is to win more Blue Flags next year, particularly in the region of Vrachasi so as to ensure high quality services since the conditions in the region are met,” added the Mayor.
Mr. Daskalakis, volunteer surveyor of the island for twenty one years, spoke on behalf of the Greek Society for the Protection of Nature.  He hopes that the Municipality of Aghios Nikolaos will come first in blue flags again next year. He continued saying: “Aghios Nikolaos is the first among the four municipalities in Crete in blue flags. It is very well organized and has very high quality of coasts while it respects all the criteria the program stipulates. Before Kallikrates, Aghios Nikolaos was the first municipality in blue flags all over Greece but after the merging of municipalities in bigger municpalities, it came third following the municipalities of Rhodes and Kos”.
The president of the Municipal Community of Elounda, Evangelos Mavrikakis, was pleased that the area won again this year as it firstly certifies the high quality services in tourism and secondly, rewards the efforts made to keep the beaches clean.
