E.Venizelos Criticizes Parliamentary Budget Office

Greek FinMin said on Thursday that the Greek parliamentary budget office lacks the expertise, experience and accountability of international organizations, responding to questions about the issue that has arisen by the publication of a report.
All international organizations (such as European Commission, IMF and OECD) and domestic independent authorities (BoG) know how to prepare, cross-check and publish reports about the status and outlook of macroeconomic and fiscal figures, Evangelos Venizelos stated, adding that the office’s report on budget estimates lacks the necessary validity.
“As I had the opportunity to discuss with the president of parliament yesterday, all necessary measures to strengthen the expertise of the budget office will be taken,” the statement added.
The parliament budget office was set up as part of a series of fiscal reforms taken in the past year-and-a-half to bring greater oversight to Greece΄s budget process.
In a report Wednesday, the budget office said that Greece΄s debt dynamics are veering “out of control” and the country is unlikely to meet its deficit targets for the year.
