Merkel Rejects Calls to Oust Greece

Amid growing dissent among her own supporters, German Chancellor Angela Merkel rejected Monday calls for Greece to be expelled from the eurozone, saying such a course was neither feasible nor legal.
‘I think that if we did, we might set off a domino effect that would be extremely dangerous for our monetary system,’ she told reporters in Berlin. Merkel said what was important was that Greece carried out the promises it made to obtain emergency loans.
Greece, Italy: situation fragile
German Chancellor Angela Merkel told parliamentarians from her Christian Democratic Union that the situation on Greece and Italy was “extremely fragile,” a party source present at the briefing said on Monday.
“The situation is extremely fragile,” the source, speaking on the condition of anonymity quoted Merkel as saying.
Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council, who is trying to coax the eurozone nations toward unity, met with Merkel late Monday at her Berlin office. Government sources said the two agreed that Greece and other countries should quickly institute structural and budgetary reforms. They also discussed suggestions for tighter economic cooperation within the eurozone.
