Student Protests Continue

For the second week in a row, protests by teachers and students have continued in Greece against the new reform law for state education, which was passed by an overwhelming majority last month, with 250 votes in favour out of 300 MPs in the Greek Parliament. Today, teachers at Athens Polytechnic called a 48-hour strike, with more than 230 faculties understaffed, including some in universities and technical colleges. The figures come from the students who are organising new general assemblies in their faculties to assess the situation and to decide on their next move, ahead of the start of term scheduled for September 12.
For her part, Education Minister, Anna Diamantopoulou, told a press conference that she saw more party-political interest in the protest demonstrations and little to do with the interests of the students.
