Cyprus Police Pass Information to Greece in Match Rigging Case

Police have passed on information to the Greek authorities relating to the bank accounts of people allegedly involved in a match-fixing scandal in Greece, it was revealed yesterday.
Police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos said yesterday: “We are cooperating fully with the Attorney-general and the Unit for Combating Money Laundering. Police investigations to date have come up with certain evidence which the Greek authorities have already been briefed on.”
Local paper Phileleftheros yesterday reported that millions of euros have been found in Cyprus-based bank accounts belonging to people suspected of match-fixing in Greece. The Greek authorities are now trying to establish whether these millions came from the proceeds of winning bets. The Cypriot authorities are preparing to freeze the accounts while investigators attempt to clarify the legitimacy of the source of the sums of money, reported the paper.
Asked to comment, Katsounotos said: “We do not consider it appropriate to disclose the evidence we have”, noting that it could be used as part of the Greek authorities’ investigations.
The spokesman did not rule out Cypriot police launching their own investigation into any possible crime committed in Cyprus.
Earlier this month, police received a formal request from Greek authorities seeking assistance in tracing accounts belonging to people allegedly involved in a match-fixing scandal that erupted in June.
