Lesvos Petrified Forest Declared Top European Geopark 2011-2014

Τhe Petrified Forest of Lesvos was declared top European Geopark for 2011-2014 after the second phase of the evaluation process conducted by the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) was concluded.
The GGN decision was ratified by UNESCO during the 10th European Geoparks Conference held in the city of Langesund, Telemark county, Norway from 16-18 September 2011.
According to the Coordination Office for the Global UNESCO Network of Geoparks, Lesvos Petrified Forest is considered an ideal example to be followed by all members of the GGN and the European Geopark Network (EGN).
The evaluation paper certifies the quality of infrastructure and the high standards of visitor care provided by The Natural History Museum of Lesvos Petrified Forest.
Moreover, the Conference included the presentation of the results from the Museum’s 10-year-long activities aimed at advertising the Greek Petrified Forest at an international level.
280 scientists and Geopark representatives from more than 30 countries around the world were present at Langesund.
After the inclusion of its new members, UNESCO GGN counts today 87 Geoparks from 27 countries around the world, while the EGN consists of 49 Geoparks from 16 European countries.
