International research expedition aims to uncover the archaelogical treasures hiding under the sea of Crete. American and Greek researchers are trying to bring to light shipwrecks lying on the seabed of Iraklion Bay.
Archaelogists of the Euphorate of Underwater Antiquities in collaboration with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution are going to examine the 300 square kilometers of the Iraklion Bay, using the most advanced methods of marine research.
The head of the research expedition, Dimitris Sakellariou told Espresso Newspaper, “Our purpose is underwater research in order to detect ancient shipwrecks mainly from the Minoan period, namely the period when Knosos was still alive, and Iraklion Bay was the place through which ships approached the island of Crete”.
