National Water Monitoring Network at Risk

The Government issued a decision this week concerning the creation of a national network that will monitor the quality and size of Greek water reserves. The government aims in this way to provide the country with a solution against pollution and drought.
However, the impending merger of state bodies constitutes a threat for the success of the whole project, since the two main bodies assigned with running the network – the Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration and the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research – might cease to exist because of the austerity measures.
Professor Andreas Andreadakis, general secretary at the Ministry of Environment, told Kathimerini that “25 million euros in EU funding already had been set aside for the project”.
