Protesters Block Ministry Entrances

Dozens of members of ADEDY, the Greek trade union for public sector workers, have this morning occupied the Ministries of Agricultural Development, Trade and Finance, in protest against the temporary suspensions introduced by the Greek government to reduce by at least 30,000 the number of state employees, as demanded by the so-called “troika” (IMF, EU, ECB).
“There is very big turmoil and very deep anger in society,” the secretary general of public sector union ADEDY, Ilias Iliopoulos, told Reuters as he took part in the protest, which blocked several buildings including the Finance Ministry.
Action is also underway at the Ministry of Public Education. A group of students has managed to enter the building and is attempting to hang a large placard. Demonstrators are protesting against the new law on universities and demanding its withdrawal.
