Turkey Against Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling in Cyprus

After the Republic of Cyprus decided to proceed with the drilling for oil and gas in the Southeastern Mediterranean, Turkey has reacted rather provocatively demanding the immediate halt in the search. Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Beglitis answered Turkish provocations by saying that “Searching for oil and gas within the sovereign borders of Cyprus will not stop because of Turkey’s threats”.
The Minister said during a radio interview that a Foreign Affairs Minister should not be intimidated by anyone if he trusts his country’s Armed Forces. “Greece is not afraid of Turkey’s threats. We are here to settle down any possible crisis in the wider region, even if tension should escalate in the future. Greece is ready to form alliances that will secure peace in the region even if that means that Turkey will be diplomatically isolated from its neighboring countries” added Mr. Beglitis.
A few days ago, Turkey called openly the oil and gas research in Block 12 illegal action on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus and warned that it will take all necessary measures to exercise Northern Cyprus sovereign rights as well as its own in the region.
