Mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Mpoutaris stated after the meeting of the Turkish Airlines’ presentation that 30,000 tourists from Turkey visited Thessaloniki in 2011.
Mpoutaris stated, “The beginning of flights from Constantinople to Thessaloniki via Turkish Airlines contribute to the improvement of the relations between the two countries and the increase of mutual visits of Greek and Turkish tourists”. “We are also work on the restoration of historical Ottoman monuments and neighbourhoods of Muslims”, Mayor of Thessaloniki highlighted.
Turkish airlines are not only aiming to transfer tourists but above all to bring together tourists from different countries, to annihilate distances. This step is of importance because the Greek economy and tourism are given a boost through a large number of tourists coming from East.
Journalists from Turkey have also visited Thessaloniki for two days within the Press Trip event, organized by Turkish Airlines. Specifically, ten media representatives from Turkey came to Thessaloniki on Friday, firstly visited Turkish Ambassador to Thessaloniki, Tugrul Biltekin and then Kemal Ataturk’s museum.
On Saturday, they visited the Science Centre and Technology Museum, Noesis with the rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Ioannis Mylopoulos.
Afterwards, the Turkish journalists were guided by the sightseeings of Thessaloniki, the White Tower and the Castles. On Sunday, they departed from Thessaloniki on a direct flight from Thessaloniki to Constantinople.
Lastly, Utku Yazan, chief executive of Turkish Airlines said that special agreements have been made regarding tourists who wish to travel to Thessaloniki. In particular, hotels will make a 20% discount to the clients of Turkish Airlines.
