Protesters Throw Stones from Byzantine Monument at Riot Police

According to Ethnos daily on Saturday, hooded young men pillaged the old Byzantine walls of Thessaloniki, gathering stones to throw at riot police during the anti-austerity protests of last week.
The incident occurred on the sidelines of the large November 17 march and was covered by a local TV channel. More than 15,000 people have joined the 1973 student uprising commemorative march and demonstrated against the proposed EU/IMF austerity measures imposed by the new coalition government.
The Byzantine walls in the northern part of the city are dated back to the 4th century AD and are a major attraction of the northern Greek city.
An 18-year-old man was arrested in the clashes and was later charged with disturbing the peace and attempted arson.
