The union of museum and ancient sites’ custodians had announced earlier Friday that they would only be working a five-day week “as the culture ministry is unable to pay for weekend work”.
But after discussions with the Ministry of Culture, the strike action to commence this weekend was eventually suspended.
“The strike has been suspended because the Ministry of Culture assures us that weekend and overtime will be paid,” union president Yiannis Mavrikopoulos told AFP.
“We still need the confirmation from the Finance Ministry and we hope that the problem will be resolved once and for all next week.”
The union will go ahead with the closures if the problem is not resolved, Mavrikopoulos warned.
