Cyprus and UAE to Cooperate Further Concerning Thalassemia Disease

President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias received the president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and emir of Abu Dhabi His Highness Dr Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to discuss further cooperation, particularly on medical issues, between Cyprus and UAE.
Sheikh Khalifa, accompanied by Abu Dhabi doctors, a guest of the Cyprus Thalassemia centre, said that the emirate wanted to create its own thalassemia foundation and cooperate with Cypriot experts and doctors.
Mediterranean and Arab populations have a higher incidence of thalassemia than other ethnic groups.
Thalassemia was endemic in Cyprus with a frequency of 1 in 6 persons, but with new measures taken new cases can successfully be prevented.
