Industrialist Calls for Unity Among Political Leaders

The head of Greece’s industrialists’ association Thursday called on the country’s political parties to quit bickering and press ahead with economic reforms needed to save Greece from bankruptcy and a disorderly exit from the euro.
His remarks come just a day before Prime Minister Lucas Papademos is due to begin a series of meetings with political leaders to discuss the term and mandate of Greece’s interim government.
“Today, it remains an open question whether we remain in Europe or not,” said Dimitris Daskalopoulos, president of the Federation of Greek Industry. “It is the obligation and interest of the parties who take part in the government to cooperate in a sincere manner and exorcise once and for all the nightmare of the drachma and a national depreciation.
“That which is at stake is enormous. In the next short while, Europe will decide whether they want us, and we will decide whether we want to be part of Europe,” Daskalopoulos said. “Either we sign the new loan deal and the accompanying reforms, or we will be thrown out of the euro.”
