Papademos to Nail Down Duration of Coalition

Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos will hold talks with all three parties in his coalition to nail down a time frame and possible end date for his government after internal divisions have created friction, reports said Wednesday.
“There will be talks with the heads of the three parties … with the aim of settling how much time the coalition has to fulfill its mandate,” the Greek Ana news agency reported, citing an unnamed government source.
Local media said the move appeared to be in response to remarks made earlier on Wednesday by New Democracy that any additional austerity measures beyond those already agreed on should only be decided by a new government.
“Any new measures to achieve the 2013-15 economic stabilisation program goals must be decided by the next government,” New Democracy spokesman Yannis Mihelakis told television station Ant1.
Papademos said in a statement after a cabinet meeting that he wanted to see a quick agreement on pension reform, “by January 15, or better still, by January 10.
“If we do not get pension reform settled by mid-January, we will have major problems” with the country’s bailout partners, the EU, European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, he added.
