Historic Building in Limassol To Be Demolished

The Supreme Court of the Republic of Cyprus has decided to grant the new owners of the historic building “Anotera” the right to demolish it, after the Municipality’s efforts to include the building in its restoration list have failed.
The building, located in the town of Limassol and used to host the 4th Supreme Military Command, had been a point of reference in the battlefields during the Turkish invasion in Cyprus in 1974.
The Board of the Limassol Municipality held a session and voted on whether the municipality would file an appeal against the Supreme Court’s decision to demolish the historic building. Two of the municipal councilors have voted for it, 16 against it, and have eight abstained from the procedure.
The mayor of Limassol, Mr. Andreas Christou, stated that there is no other choice left but for the municipality to comply with the Court’s decision. He noted, however, that the building located on the beginning of Victor Hugo Street and on the historic Gladstonos Street “carries a long and heavy history with it; a history connected to the events of the past 40 years. We believe that this should have been taken into consideration”.
